  16. <p>Investigators find evidence of El Salvador's worst civil-war
  17. massacre

  19. <p>    Government officials and their U.S. patrons repeatedly denied
  20. it. But when a team of forensic anthropologists excavated
  21. nearly 60 of several hundred battered skeletons from around a
  22. demolished church in what was once an F.M.L.N. guerrilla
  23. stronghold, they found convincing evidence of what some
  24. journalists and human-rights activists have said for years: as
  25. many as 800 civilians, most of them women and children, were
  26. mutilated, burned and murdered in and around the remote
  27. northeastern town of El Mozote in 1981, by soldiers from the
  28. Salvadoran army's U.S.-trained Atlacatl Battalion.
  29. </p>
  30. <p>    The victims' relatives want those responsible tried for
  31. murder, even though a new amnesty law prevents any of the
  32. perpetrators from having to serve time for political crimes.
  33. They would also welcome the final dissolution of the notorious
  34. battalion, as was stipulated under the current peace plan signed
  35. by both the government and the rebels last January. But the San
  36. Salvador government has indefinitely suspended the battalion's
  37. disbanding, claiming the F.M.L.N. has yet to demobilize its
  38. troops according to the schedule. The former rebels claim that
  39. despite advances in political, police and land reform, they will
  40. not meet the Oct. 31 disarmament deadline because judicial and
  41. electoral reforms are lagging, and rebel leaders are still
  42. targets of violence. To break the deadlock, the U.N. proposed
  43. a six-week extension for compliance.
